Are You a Good Candidate for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)?

Are you having trouble getting pregnant? In vitro fertilization (IVF) may help you expand your family. Dr. Minna Selub, your South Florida ivfphysician, offers IVF treatment and other fertility services at Florida Institute for Reproductive Sciences and Technologies in Weston, FL and serving patients from South Florida, including the Jacksonville and Tampa areas.

What is IVF?

The first step in IVF involves stimulating the ovaries with fertility medication to produce multiple eggs. Once the eggs have matured, they're removed with a hollow needle during a minor surgical procedure. Extracted or donor eggs are then mixed with sperm in a laboratory. Healthy embryos resulting from the procedure are implanted in your uterus during the final step in the treatment. If one or more of the eggs implant in the lining of your uterus, you will become pregnant.

Am I a good candidate for IVF?

Your South Florida physician may recommend IVF if:

  • Your infertility is due to a problem with your Fallopian tubes: Your eggs can't travel from your ovaries to your uterus if there's an issue with your Fallopian tubes. IVF may be recommended if one or both of your tubes are missing or if the tubes are blocked, damaged or scarred.
  • You have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Your ovaries may fail to release eggs if you have PCOS, even though the eggs are mature. The IVF procedure can help you overcome this obstacle to parenthood.
  • Your male partner suffers from infertility. IVF is often recommended if the male partner has a low sperm count or an abnormality with his sperm. During the IVF procedure, the healthiest sperm are selected to increase the chances of pregnancy. If your partner has a very low sperm count, it may even be possible to extract a single sperm cell using intracytoplasmic sperm injection.
  • You have endometriosis: Endometriosis can cause scarring in and around your Fallopian tubes and ovaries. Thanks to IVF treatment, it may be possible to finally become pregnant.
  • You have other fertility issues: IVF may also be a good option if you have an unexplained fertility problem, decreased ovarian reserves or irregular ovulation.
