Gestational Carrier (Surrogate)We have considerable experience with patients who wish or need to use a gestational carrier (sometimes called a surrogate). There are many reasons a gestational carrier may be necessary, including poor health of the commissioning mother, or the absence of a uterus because of previous surgery or congenital abnormality. The procedure involves IVF, in vitro fertilization of the commissioning parent’s eggs to form embryos to be transferred to the gestational carrier’s uterus. The selected carrier should be in excellent health whenever possible. A good obstetric history is preferable. Occasionally, we are able to identify a gestational carrier for a patient who has not identified her own, but most patients who use a carrier come to us with an individual woman, often a close friend or relative, already selected. If you need a gestational carrier, please contact us as we collaborate with several services, including some excellent local ones, that have carriers immediately available. An initial interview with Dr. Selub is necessary before entering the program. Before we are able to get started with your treatment cycle at F.I.R.S.T., we request that you provide us with a copy of the legal contract between you and your surrogate. Keep in mind that you will need legal counsel for this procedure because the law requires you to adopt a resulting child from the gestational carrier, or “birth mother.” Agencies that provide carriers will usually perform the legal work. Fees for the carrier’s services and legal fees are not included in our fee schedules.
