Becoming an Egg Donor

Some women dream of becoming mothers but are unable to become pregnant with their own eggs. The good news is that many of these egg donorwomen can potentially become pregnant with the help of donor eggs. If you meet the qualifications to become an egg donor, you could help make another woman’s dream of motherhood come true. Dr. Minna Selub is your South Florida physician for egg donation and fertility assistance at the Florida Institute for Reproductive Sciences and Technologies in Weston, FL and serving patients from South Florida, including the Jacksonville and Tampa areas.

Egg Donor Qualifications

Becoming an egg donor can be one of the most rewarding and selfless things you do. Becoming an egg donor is not for everyone, though. You must be in good health and have a flexible schedule to accommodate multiple appointments at our office. Some of the qualifications to become an egg donor include:

  • Under 32 years of age
  • In good health
  • Flexible schedule
  • Availability to visit the office regularly for examination
  • Ability to administer hormone injections at home

Egg Retrieval Process

Prior to retrieving any eggs, egg donors first undergo a process to stimulate egg production. During this time, egg donors administer hormone injections at home daily for about one and a half weeks. The injections help stimulate egg production in the ovaries to maximize the number of eggs that can be retrieved. During this time, donors also need to come into the doctor’s office on at least four separate occasions for blood work and vaginal ultrasound exams to ensure the ovaries are properly stimulated.

When the eggs are ready for retrieval, a thin needle is used to retrieve them. The needle is inserted into the ovaries through the vaginal wall. The egg retrieval procedure only takes about 15 minutes to complete and patients can return home the same day. Patients are sedated throughout the procedure so there is no pain or discomfort. Most patients are able to return to their normal activities the following day after the procedure.
