What Is In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF)?

Here’s what you should know about IVF, including when to consider this form of fertility treatment.

What is in-vitro fertilization (IVF)?

IVF is a type of assisted reproductive technology that combines a woman’s egg with sperm in a laboratory to create an embryo, which is then placed into the woman’s uterus for implantation. One IVF cycle can take about 2-3 weeks; however, some women may need more than one cycle. From start to finish, the process is usually about 6-8 weeks from consultation to insemination.

Here are the steps involved in undergoing IVF,

Step 1: Consultation: This initial appointment with us is the time to ask us any questions or address any concerns you might have. We will go through your treatment plan and your medical history to make sure that you are an ideal candidate for IVF.

Step 2: Preparing for IVF: During this process, you will go through several procedures including blood tests and ultrasounds. The woman will be placed on fertility medication to stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs. You will be monitored frequently by our Weston, South Florida OBGYNs to measure your hormone levels. You will also receive a hormone injection a few days before retrieving the egg.

Step 3: Retrieval process: Multiple eggs are retrieved during a minor inpatient procedure. The male will also provide a sperm sample. The egg retrieval process takes about 30 minutes.

Step 4: Insemination: We will then combine the eggs and the sperm in a lab to fertilize the egg. About 3-5 days after fertilization has occurred, we will implant the embryos into the uterus. About two weeks later you’ll come back into our practice for a blood test to see if you are pregnant.

When is IVF a good option?

IVF may be a great option for,
